Ancient Period (PRICE £3.20 Each)
Greek
The period covered by this range of figures is approx. 500BC--150BC. The "Hoplite" or heavy infantyman is the central charactor of the Greek armies of this period. Some fought naked except for a helmet, shield(hoplon),and a spear of about eight feet in length. However, most hoplites would wear a simple cloth tunic over which they would wear a corselet of leather, stiffened linen or metal.Hoplons were usually decorated to either personal taste or carried the emblem of the city state to which they belonged.Light infantry in the form of archers, slingers and javelinmen, plus medium "peltast" infantry and some cavalry made up a Greek army. However, the backbone and by far the most numerous component was the hoplite.Hoplite warfare dominated the Mediterranean until the rise of Macedon and the introduction of the pikeman.Greece,Sicily,Italy and Asia Minor all saw incessant small wars between the city states. The largest clashes of the time were the Persian Wars, the Peloponessian Wars between Athens and Sparta;the Carthaginians v Greeks in Sicily and the Romans v Greeks in Greece and Asia Minor.
Just as Greek culture spread over the then known world,so did the mercenary soldiers of Greece in search of pay and patronage.
